Is it Possible to Make Money Watching TV?
A great many tv shows have a cult following and so it is possible that if you create a blog, update it regularly with great content and build up your own following, you can make money. It does involve a lot of work. So don’t expect to make millions in your first six months. And as with an online venture, there is no guarantee of success. But you won’t know if you don’t try. Be warned, if you want to make money, even this method will mean having to do quite a lot of work.
The same steps can be applied to blogging about any subject that interests you.
Plan How to Make Money Watching TV
Start out by choosing the shows you most enjoy and do an online search to see who is already blogging about them, how many people are reading the blogs and watching related videos. Also check forums related to the shows – the more active the better and make sure there are posts being added every day.
You also need to consider the shelf life of the show. Many favourites will continue for years and even when the last series is finished, fans will watch reruns. But be careful with something new – it might be cut after the first season leaving you high and dry.
Soaps operas which have been going for years are another good bet, things like Eastenders and Coronation Street in the UK.
It probably helps if you are a complete addict who watches every interview with the writer or stars and reads every article about the show. Attending related events will also give you new material for your blog. And if you can travel to see the set, meet the stars and get a load of photographs, so much the better.
Once you’ve decided which show is best for your purposes – it’s got to be something you really enjoy, as you’ll have to watch every episode and write about it several times a week.
Getting you blog set up
WordPress is probably the best platform, as it allows plenty of flexibility and is easy to use. You can also easily add advertisements which will make you some money. You will need to get a domain name related to the show. You can get domain names at godaddy.com or namecheap.com. Try to get a dot com as it’s the one most people remember more easily, but don’t worry too much if it’s taken. If you use godaddy, ignore all the upsells – you don’t need 20 variations of the site or anything else for now. Just buy the one domain name.
Tip: you have to pay for your domain name every year – but you can pay for several years at a time, usually with a discount. There are some scams around – every year I get a letter telling me my domain is ready for renewal. It’s not from godaddy and so payment would be for nothing – you have to transfer your domain if you want to use a different company.
Another scam was an email from a company in China telling me that they had a customer who was about to buy coolercareers.net/org/info etc – I think there were nine or ten variations. And they were offering me the chance to buy first. Months later, I checked and of course no one has registered any of those names.
I wonder how many were sucked in at about $100 a year for 10 domains?? Those guys could be making a fortune. So, pick a domain name provider which is cheap and stick with them. If you have to move, it’s very straightforward, but shouldn’t be necessary as most big companies will provide a decent service.
And you’ll also need webhosting. I use hostgator and recommend them – they are inexpensive and have excellent customer service, which is really important especially when you are just getting started and have no idea what you are doing:) You can start out with their cheapest plan and upgrade later if you need to.
With a hostgator account, you can quickly and easily install WordPress from your control panel or cpanel.
Set up a free gmail account and then create email alerts for the show and the main characters. Google will then automatically let you know when a new article, video or blog post has been posted. This will save you a lot of time and keep you up to date.
You can monetize the site with ads such as Google Adsense. So it is possible to make moneywatching TV, but you will have to move from the couch to the computer and do some work.
